My Tokyo exhibition "Design of Stone--The Symphony of Form and Color" is going to be held at Aidem Photo Gallery "SIRIUS", Shinjuku Gyoenmae,1-4-10 Shinjuku , Tokyo, from 7 May till 13 May. On Sunday the 10th the gallery is closed. It features the dynamism of form and color the medieval western architecture embodies in its structural and decorative aspects apart from its religious symbolism as such.
The dark interior of a church builinding with intricate interlacing solids and voids created by stone masonry poses a variety of challenges to photography. I have been fascinated by this difficult and therefore exciting subject ever since my first encounter with Jumieges Abbey in Normandy 29 years ago. Among the churches and monasteries represented in this photo exhibition are Byzantine designs from Ravenna which is one of my long cherished treasure box of images since 1986 when I first visited the city for my research in mosaics. But in fact there will only be a couple of pictures from Ravenna this time because the the space is limited and there are so many other charming specimens from Italy, France, England and Scotland I wish to show you.
